The GHS wrestling team celebrated Homecoming Tuesday with a 56-23 dual victory over the Inola Longhorns.

“The kids wrestled well tonight,” said Grove Head Coach John Henry Ward. “They responded well. We talked all (last) week about how we needed to improve on certain things.”

The Ridgerunners recorded seven falls Tuesday night and three technical falls in the 14 matches.

Before the dual senior Callie Dollarhide was crowned as the ’08 Wrestling Homecoming Queen. Dollarhide was escorted by senior Dusty Gehrke.

Tuesday’s line up saw Grove move some personnel around in part to fill a gap at the middle-weights where earlier in the season the Ridgerunners had been forced to forfeit. As a consequence of the changes some GHS grapplers, including Gehrke, Damien Hopper, and Spencer Rutherford, were wrestling above their normal weight class. Rutherford, a sophomore, was wrestling two weights above his normal class Tuesday night and recorded a 16-6 win.

“Spencer wrestles tough and I never had any doubts about putting him up there,” said Ward. “But he’s a 125-pounder and was wrestling against a big 135’er who is pretty good.

“We’re in the process of shuffling some people around,” Ward said. “We thought it’d be in our best interest tonight to have everybody spaced like we did and it worked out great for us.”

The 189 lbs match brought the home crowd to their feet. First year Grove starter Andrew Callaway, a junior, found himself in a bit of trouble early in the match before turning the tables on his Longhorn foe and recording a first period fall.

“We’ve worked on trying to get your elbow down when a guy is trying to snake you,” Ward said about the match. “Andrew is still working on that and it showed. To his credit he battled and fought back. It would have been very easy for him to lie down because he has a hurt rib, but he didn’t. He battled back and made the most of his second chance. It was great to see that kind of effort.”

The Ridgerunners travel to Coweta this weekend for tournament action. This Thursday the Grove club will host Coweta in a Senior Night dual. Matches begin at 7:00 PM and the event will be the final home appearance for the team this season.
