The series

The two schools first squared off in 1929. Miami won that contest 40-7 and they would go on to win the next meeting, in 1932, by a score of 34-6.

The teams played to a 0-0 tie in 1934 and they wouldn’t meet again until 1978 when Miami took a 21-16 decision. The teams have played annually since then save for a four-year hiatus in the mid-‘80s.

Although Miami holds the historical edge in the series, 23-6-1, it is the Ridgerunners who have dominated the contemporary history.

Last year Grove beat the Wardogs 34-20 at Ridgerunner Stadium and in 2006 Grove came out on top by a 54-28 margin.

This season sees another change in the rivalry as Miami has moved to a Class 5A ranking making tonight’s battle solely for local bragging rights as Grove has as an OSSAA 4A placement.

Miami enters the game with a 1-1 mark after dropping their season opener at home to Wagoner, 19-13. The Wardogs rebounded last week and defeated the Jay Bulldogs for a 31-28 road win.

The Ridgerunners travel to Miami tonight for their first road test of the season. The Ridgerunners are in possession of a 2-0 record with a #2 Class 4A ranking. Last week Grove topped Wagoner 43-6 and they opened their season with a 56-7 win over McDonald County.

By the numbers

Last week the Wardogs put up a balanced offensive attack against Jay with 153 team rushing yards and 183 yards through the air. The Miami defense allowed 113 yards on the ground against Jay and 193 through the air.

Likewise the Ridgerunners had a balanced offensive performance against Wagoner last week. Grove posted 199 team rushing yards and put up 270 yards through the air. The Grove defense allowed Wagoner to rush for 213 yards but held them to 43 yards through the air with three interceptions.
