WYANDOTTE - A five-yard pass from Tate Smith to Justin Walton on fourth down in overtime made the difference as the Wyandotte Bears continued their magical season with a 20-14 win over the Colcord Hornets Friday.

The Bears defense made the touchdown stand up, stopping Colcord running back Darwin Davis short of the goal line on fourth down from the five-yard line to preserve the win.

With the win, Wyandotte (7-2, 5-2 in District 2A-8) moved into third place in the district with one game remaining. With the loss, and the win by Commerce over Kansas, the Hornets (6-3, 3-3) are left in fifth place and on the outside looking in for the postseason.

Wyandotte tied the score with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Taking over on their own 35 and trailing 14-8 following a Colcord score, the Bears got a 41-yard gain from Andrew Douthit on the second play of the possession. Tate Smith followed with a 17-yard gain to move the ball inside the 10. Three plays later, Dalton Cummings would score from a yard out to tie the score. Cummings run for two points was unsuccessful.

Smith finished with 147 yards on 15-of-18 passing. His 40-yard touchdown pass to Walton broke open a scoreless game in the third quarter and gave the Bears a 6-0 lead.

Colcord would bounce back with a big play on their next possession when Austin Gilbert found Davis for a 65-yard touchdown pass. The extra point would give Colcord a 7-6 lead.

The Hornets would extend their lead in the fourth quarter. Taking over at their own five following a missed field goal, Colcord would grind down the field with 14 plays, starting with a 12-yard gain by Davis to get out of the shadow of their own end zone. Davis would run the ball four consecutive times for 22 yards.

The Hornets would convert three third downs on the drive, but the biggest play came on a fourth down from the 20, when quarterback Austin Gilbert found Slaten Ford for a 14-yard gain to the Wyandotte six. Stephen Copeland would score on the next play to make the score 14-8.

Wyandotte would score on the ensuing possession to force overtime.

Cummings led the Bears with 87 yards on 25 carries, while Douthit added 86 yards on the ground. Walton finished with 84 yards on eight catches, scoring a pair of touchdowns.

Davis ran for 83 yards on 20 carries. Gilbert threw for a season-high 192 yards.

Wyandotte will play Salina next week, while Colcord will travel to Ketchum.
