Playing for the first time in over a week thanks to the winter weather earlier in the week, the Grove Lady Ridgerunners bounced back with a win over Locust Grove Friday night, only to lose to Wagoner for the second time this season on Saturday.
In Friday's game the Lady Ridgerunners dominated the paint in posting a 64-38 win over the Lady Pirates.
Freshman Mason Jeffries led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds, including seven points in the third period as Grove took a 25-21 halftime lead and extended it to 51-30.
Taylor Dodson added 12 points and four rebounds, scoring 10 in the first half to carry the Lady Ridgerunners offensively over the first two periods.
Jeffries added eight first half points and fellow post player Kat Johnson chipped in six points and three rebounds to account for 24 of Grove's 25 first half points.
Grove also held a huge edge on the boards, outrebounding Locust Grove 36-13 for the game.
But the Lady Pirates kept it close for nearly two and a half quarters, trailing 30-26 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. However, on a night when they scored most of their points in the paint, it was a trio of three-pointers - one by Kelsey Kerr and two by Shae Scott - that sparked a 21-4 run to end the third quarter.
The Lady Ridgerunners would increase their lead to as much as 27 in the fourth quarter as they cruised to their fifth victory of the year.
Scott finished with nine points for Grove while Kenzie Miller added eight, all in the second half. Bailey Holman led Locust Grove with 12 points.
After being the keys to victory Friday night, rebounding and points in the paint would prove to be the Lady Ridgerunners' undoing in a 50-42 loss to Wagoner on Saturday.
After the start of the game was delayed for an hour due to a lack of referees, the Lady Bulldogs, led by Sherri Lang and Laura Reel, outrebounded the Lady Ridgerunners 41-25 in beating Grove for the second time this season.
Wagoner beat Grove 44-37 in the season opener on December 3.
Lang finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Reel had 12 and 12 for Wagoner.
The Lady Ridgerunners fell behind early, trailing 12-6 with 2:30 to play in the first quarter, and could never quite catch up. Grove (5-5) got as close as 18-17 with six minutes left in the first half before three straight turnovers helped Wagoner extend their lead back to seven before settling for a 26-23 halftime lead.
Unable to generate much offense from the field for most of the night, the Lady Ridgerunners stayed close from the free throw line, with mixed results. Grove made seven of eight from the line in the first quarter, but could only put in 4-of 10 in the second quarter. In the third quarter the Lady Ridgerunners scored all six of their points for the period from the line (in eight attempts), but a 3-of-12 effort in the final quarter helped seal their fate.
Grove would get as close as 30-29 with just over three minutes left in the third period. But the Lady Bulldogs would score the last six points of the quarter and Grove would go nearly eight minutes without a point before a layup by Scott made the score 38-31 with just over five minutes to play.
Scott and Kerr made threes on consecutive possessions to make the score 47-42 with 38 seconds left, but the Lady Bulldogs made seven of ten from the line in the period to keep Grove at bay despite 12 fourth quarter turnovers.
Kerr led Grove with 11 points. The Lady Ridgerunners will play again Tuesday night when they travel to Catoosa to take on the Lady Indians.
