OAKS-When asked to describe this year’s Lady Warrior team, Oaks Coach Vince Osborn puts it simply, saying, “We’re as good, or better than we were last season.  So far it‘s been a day by day thing, but I‘m starting to see some improvement.”

Considering that last year the Oaks girls advanced to the Regional Tournament in Porter, that’s a pretty good indication that this year’s squad will be pretty good. And unlike many other teams, the Lady Warriors weren’t decimated by graduation, losing only one starter, Cheyenne Foreman.

Thankfully, the lack of attrition allows them to feature three seniors in their post-oriented, double ought offensive scheme.  Last year’s leading scorer is senior Shayla Barnett.  Barnett can easily fit in at the post position as well as at power forward.  Joining the Oaks’ stalwart are a pair of senior returning starters, Chynna Cooper and Malaurie Blackfox.  Blackfox and Cooper are both surprisingly quick to the ball and are equally effective from both the two and three point range.

Add Francis Milspaugh, Haley Keyes, Stephni Wilson and basketball legacy Lauri Osburn to this recipe and the Lady Warriors have a wealth of experience to throw on the floor this season.

Even with all of these returning starters, the addition of three extremely gifted freshmen might well be the story of this year’s Lady Warrior fortunes.  Though not overly eager to brag about his incoming crop of ninth graders, Coach Osburn has been pleased with the work of guards Shawnee Watkins and Shantell Synor.

“One or both of them might well see their fair share of playing time,” Osborn said.

But probably the most significant addition to the Oaks fold is Allyson Foreman.  One look at the formidable freshman and visions of Kansas All-Stater Brooke Panther jump immediately to mind.

And when that comparison was proffered to Osburn, he could only smile and say, “I know.  And wait until we get her in shape.”

Look for the Lady Warriors to improve as their season continues and, barring any future injury problems, they could easily make a deeper run in the postseason.
