BLACKWELL - Whether is was the long bus rides or it just wasn't their weekend, the Grove Ridgerunners finished fifth out of 14 teams at the Will Rogers Conference wrestling tournament held in Blackwell on Friday and Saturday.
The Ridgerunners finished with six medalists led by senior heavyweight Josh Friend, who finished second.
Benny Steffenson and Mike Boone each finished in third place at 182 and 220 pounds, respectively. Blake Clodfelter and and Garrett Sisco finished fourth place in their weight divisions. Clodfelter wrestled at 170 and Sisco wrestled at 138 pounds.
At 132 pounds, Josh Perez finished sixth.
"We didn't wrestle bad," Grove head coach John Henry Ward said. "We had several guys one match away from getting medals. For whatever reason, it just wasn't our weekend."
The Ridgerunners will now turn their attention to the Dual State Championships at Yukon High School this weekend. Grove will open the Championships with Lawton MacArthur in the quarterfinals at noon on Saturday.
"They're tough," Ward said of the second-ranked Highlanders. "But we'll do the best we can and whatever happens, happens."
