From staff reports

With one week left in the regular season the playoff destinies of most area teams have been all but finalized. Grove, Afton, Colcord and Fairland have all qualified for the postseason, while the Kansas Comets will need to upset the Salina Wildcats on Friday to have a chance of advancing to week 11. Following is a breakdown of where those four teams are expected to finish and possible first-round opponents.

Grove: The Ridgerunners will finish third in District 5A-4 no matter the outcome of the regular season finale against Tahlequah. With 5A-4 being matched up against 5A-3 in the first round of the playoffs, the Ridgerunners will face the second place finisher in that district. Friday’s matchup between McAlester and Booker T. Washington will determine the district champ, with Grove traveling to the loser’s place.

Afton: The Eagles have wrapped up the district title in A-8 and will finish the regular season with a non-district game at Yale on Friday in an attempt at the fifth undefeated regular season in school history. District A-8 is matched up with A-7 for the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles will face the fourth place team in that district. Currently, Drumright, Hominy, and Barnsdall are battling it out for the right to travel to Afton to take on the Eagles in the first round.

Fairland: The Owls will finish in third in A-8 after last Friday’s loss to Foyil regardless of the outcome of Friday’s season finale against Hulbert. Fairland will go on the road in the first round to face either Woodland, Morrison or Hominy.

Colcord: The Hornets will finish second in District 2A-8 barring either a major letdown in their season finale against Ketchum or a major upset by Quapaw over district leader Commerce. Barring those scenarios, the Hornets will be looking at a first round playoff matchup against the third place team in 2A-7. At this point either Chelsea or Pawhuska appear to be the most likely opponent, but slip ups by either Lincoln Christian or Newkirk could change things.

Kansas: For the Comets things are very simple: beat a struggling Adair team that has lost two of its last three games and claim fourth place in 2A-8. That would get the Comets a road trip to most likely either Lincoln Christian or Newkirk in the first round of the playoffs.
