MUSKOGEE - It may not have been easy - or pretty - but first year Grove boys basketball head coach Zach Trimble picked up his first career win in his second try on Friday as the Ridgerunners got a late basket to escape with a 34-32 win over Vian in consolation action at the Hilldale Tournament.
After trailing by as much as 10 points in the second half, the Wolverines rallied to tie the game at 30 after Eric Casey made one of two free throws with just under four minutes to play in the game.
Kyle Summerfield answered with a pair of buckets for Grove to retake the lead. After a Ridgerunner turnover with 30 seconds left, the Wolverines had a pair of shots bounce off the rim as time expired, allowing Grove to advance in the consolation bracket.
Colton Cooper led the Ridgerunners with 11 points, including six in the first quarter as Grove took a 10-7 lead. Tyler Busch finished with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Summerfield added nine points and six rebounds.
Dalton Gold and Zac Vickers led Vian with seven points apiece. The Wolverines will play Morris in the seventh-place game at 11:30 today.
The Ridgerunners will play Heavener, a 61-42 winner over Morris Friday, in the fifth place game at 2:30 today in the Event Center at Hilldale High School.
Grove 44, Hilldale 22 (girls)
The Lady Ridgerunners took advantage of an undersized Hilldale squad in a big way, imposing their will in the paint and shooting 34 free throws in a 44-22 win to advance to the championship finals.
Kat Johnson took special advantage of the Lady Hornets, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing six rebounds in leading the Lady Ridgerunners into the finals against Roland, a 59-47 winner over Stilwell in the other semifinal.
Grove dominated from the start, holding Hilldale scoreless in taking a 10-0 after the first quarter. The lead would build to 22-9 late in the first half and 23-11 at the break.
Johnson had eight points in the first half, while Taylor Dodson had eight of her 10 points in the first two quarters.
After a slow third quarter in which the Lady Ridgerunners scored just six points offensively, Johnson scored 13 points herself in the fourth, including making all seven of her free throw attempts in the game.
In all, the Lady Ridgerunners made 24 free throws, fouling out a pair of Lady Hornets in the process.
Hilldale was led by Cassady Mills's eight points. The Lady Hornets will take on Stilwell in the third place game at 4:00 today.
Grove and Roland will tip off at 7:00 tonight at the Event Center at Hilldale High School
