The Grove Lady Red (5-4) basketball team overcame a first half deficit to claim a 66-57 Verdigris Valley Conference home win Friday night over the Wagoner Lady Bulldogs (6-6.)
“It was a big win for us,” said Grove Head Coach Richard Bassett.
Down 26-18 to begin the second half Grove began their resurgence on the three point shooting prowess of junior Logan Cook and the dominant inside game of senior Margaret Pogue.
“Logan did a great job of shooting from the outside and Margaret did a great job on the inside,” said Bassett.
Three minutes into the third quarter Cook landed the first of her five treys on the evening to kick start a 13-0 run for Grove that saw the Lady Ridgerunners take a 36-30 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the frame.
Wagoner pulled to within three points early in the fourth quarter but a 6-0 run by Grove, fueled by four from junior Rachel Allington, slammed the door and meant that the Lady Red had the measure of their opponent.
Pogue ended the game with 28 points while Cook finished with 17.
“Margaret does a great job of working and finding the open lanes,” said Bassett. “The girls are working hard to get the ball to her and when we do it right then we get good looks. And it also helps on the outside shots because look what Logan did tonight with the opportunities that she had. She shot the ball extremely well.”
Allington scored nine points on the evening.
“Rachel has been stepping up in practice and gaining a lot of confidence,” Bassett said.
The Lady Red held a 9-8 lead after the first eight minutes but an 18-9 run by the Lady Bulldogs in the second quarter gave them an intermission lead.
Wagoner’s Janae McJunkis scored 32 points Friday night, 16 in each half.
The Lady Ridgerunners retook the lead in the second half with 4:45 remaining in the third off a three-pointer from Cook and never looked back.
Besides being the Lady Red high scorer Friday night Pogue dominated the boards with 13 rebounds. Junior Peri Lane pulled in four.
The Lady Ridgerunners now begin preparations for the NEO Tournament later this week. Grove will face Guthrie at 6:30 at the NEO A&M Student Activity Center.
