Patricia Island Golf Report from pro shop manager Randy Warren
It was my pleasure, along with Lynn Stewart, Ileta Bray and Jim Henry to witness a great round of golf carded by Patricia Island Golf Club member Bob “Pappy” Goben on Sunday, August 22.
Not only did Pappy shoot his age of 79 but also hit one of the best approach shots I’ve seen on hole number 8 from 162 yards to card an eagle.
Pappy struck the ball, accompanied by that sweet sound at impact, carried three yards beyond the pin, hit and spun back into the hole. Pappy went on to a great round and was the winner of the weekly Patricia Island Open Quota competition.
Everyone is invited to play the Open Quota each Sunday starting at 12:30 and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8 a.m. Quota handicaps are kept separately from GHIN and adjusted each time a player posts a quota score.
Anyone interested please call the pro shop at 786-3338 ext 18 for details and signup information.
Hole in One
In other action, Curtis King of Joplin, MO carded an ace on the 114-yard, par-3 hole number four using a pitching wedge.
This Saturday at 1 p.m. Patricia Island will host the annual Gary Dunham Memorial Golf Tournament. The four-person scramble event is directed by Mark Morris and Mike Davenport. If anyone would like to enter please call Mark at 918-791-1069 or the pro shop at 786-3338 ext 18.
Scott Ousley’s new nickname is “Eagle Boy”
Scott Ousley, whose parents are Grand Lakers (Bud and Dianne Ousley of Patricia Island), had an eagle the other day. Driver, then seven iron and made the putt on hole number one at Patricia Island and then eagled it again this past Sunday.
He also had an eagle on hole number two at Grand Cherokee. During a scramble, he hit a drive to within one foot of the hole on the 378-yard par-four. Way to go Eagle Boy.
Golf Tip of the Week
Slowly swing a golf club like a baseball bat keeping it parallel to the ground or as horizontal as you can, as if the ball is on a four-foot tee. Notice how you elbows collapse in to your sides when the club head comes to the same side.
This is a proper, natural thing. Now, slowly lower your swing a little at a time but keep making the same motion that you made when the club was parallel to the ground. Eventually you will have lowered the plane to where you are making a perfect golf swing. Congratulations.
Golf Joke of the Week
Police are called to an apartment and find a woman holding a blood five-iron standing over a lifeless man.
The detective asks, “Ma’am, is that your husband?”
“Yes,” the woman says.
“Did you hit him with that golf club?”
“Yes, yes I did.” The woman begins to sob, drops the club and puts her hands on her face.
“How many times did you hit him,” the detective asks.
“I don’t know,” the woman replies. “Five, six, maybe seven times…just put me down for a five.”
