It was all treats for the Grove Ridgerunners Halloween night as the 4A #2 squad took their ninth consecutive game of the season with a 66-21 road win over the Locust Grove Pirates at Leonard Yarborough Stadium.

The victory clinched the 4A-3 District Championship for Grove and assured them of a home field advantage for the opening round(s) of the playoffs.

A night of big plays on both sides of the ball for the Ridgerunners saw Grove score eight times, including their first six possessions, before the Pirates could mount a fourth quarter answer.

In one half of work Grove running back Casey Bartley posted 165 yards on six carries for two touchdowns. The junior recorded a 74-yard touchdown burst late in the second quarter to partner a first quarter 21-yard touchdown rush.

Ridgerunner senior wide receiver Ryan Miller had two first half receptions for touchdowns; the first a 29-yarder and the second good from 25 yards out.

Grove senior Dusty Gehrke nabbed five receptions on the night including a second quarter touchdown.

Besides delivering the three touchdown passes, while going 9 of 16 for 143 yards, Ridgerunner senior quarterback Corey Davenport also scored a rushing touchdown on a fourth and goal situation midway through the second quarter.

The Ridgerunner defense swabbed the deck of the Pirate offensive ship and limited Locust Grove to -16 rushing yards and 36 passing yards through the 42-0 first half.

Grove junior defensive lineman Weston Culvey scooped up a first quarter Locust Grove fumble and returned it 27 yards for a Ridgerunner touchdown.

Meanwhile, teammates Antonio Trillo, Laramie Raymond, and Trent Phillips all recorded first half sacks of Pirate quarterback Matt Luetjen.

The Ridgerunner special teams worked to perfection in the contest. Senior place kicker T.J. Griffith went 9 for 9 on PAT attempts and scored a 21-yard field goal.

Grove filled the majority of the third and all of the fourth quarter with reserve and underclassmen players. Sophomore running back Jarrod Leach made an impressive showing with 72 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns.

From here the Ridgerunners will begin preparations for this Friday’s home contest with arch rival the Jay Bulldogs. The Bulldogs defeated Catoosa 16-14 Friday night for a road win that advanced their season record to 5-4.
