JAY – Having lost to Grove 50-38 at the beginning of the month, the Jay Bulldogs finally got a chance for revenge on Friday, pulling away in the second half for a 59-39 win. Grove won the first meeting between the two teams on January 4 largely by outrebounding the Bulldogs 39-19. Post player Chase Hilton led the way in that contest with 22 points and 16 rebounds. But on Friday it was the Bulldogs who held a 16-5 edge on the boards in the second half while also holding Hilton to just eight points on the night. The Bulldogs also won by committing just seven turnovers on the night, while forcing 20 giveaways by the Ridgerunners. A leaning three by Brandon Edge at the buzzer gave Jay an 11-5 lead after the opening quarter. Jay would boost its lead to 17-8 midway through the period when Shai Jones drove for a three-point play. But Grove (5-8) would bounce back with threes by Trae Fairchild and Bryce Davenport to surge back into the game. The 10-0 run was capped by a steal and layup by Tyler Busch that gave the Ridgerunners an 18-17 lead. A three by Brett Smoke would give Jay (11-6) a 20-18 halftime lead. The Bulldogs would carry that momentum into the third period. Getting nine points from Brandon Edge and seven more from Josh Ramsey, the Bulldogs led by as much as 11 in the third. A three by Ramsey at the buzzer gave Jay a 38-28 lead. From there the wheels would fall off for Grove. With their offense sputtering, the Ridgerunners were unable to keep up with Jay’s hot shooting. Two threes by Chucky Larrabee were part of a 17-4 run that put Jay up 55-35 with just over a minute left in the game as the Bulldogs put the game away. Hilton’s eight points and nine rebounds led Grove, while Zac Knox chipped in seven. Ramsey and Edge led Jay with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Bulldogs will travel to Locust Grove on Tuesday to take on the fifth-ranked Pirates, who lost for the just the second time this season on Friday, falling to undefeated, second-ranked Vinita 55-50 in overtime. The Ridgerunners will host Hilldale on Tuesday.   Jay 59, Grove 39                1st           2nd          3rd          4th           Final JHS        11           9             18           21           59 GHS       5             13           10           11           39   JHS: J.
