Area track teams compete at Vinita
Teams from Jay, Colcord, Kansas and Fairland competed at the Vinita Invitational track meet on Saturday.
On the girls’ side the Lady Bulldogs finished third overall with 80 points. Vinita won the event with 171 points while Miami finished second with 81 points.
Talisa Budder and Lindsey Hobbs led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with a combined three gold medals. Budder won the 3,200 meter run with a time of 12:36 while Hobbs won both the discus (103-8) and the shot put (30-1).
On the boys’ side Kansas’ Tyler Lankston won gold medals in the 100 and 400 meter runs to lead the Comets to a 10th place finish. Colcord’s Canaan Sherrell also won a pair of golds, finishing first in the 200 meters and in the long jump as the Hornets finished eighth in the team standings.
Fairland’s Jesse Drosche won the high jump with a jump of 6-6.
The Jay Bulldogs finished sixth with 49.5 points despite not winning any gold medals.
Local runners win at Bulldog Classic
The Healthy Nation Bulldog Classic 5K Run was held at Jay on Saturday with several Delaware County runners winning medals.
In the overall male category Kansas’s Seth Whittington finished fifth with a time of 21:09. On the women’s side Jay’s Alicia Starks finished second in the overall category with a time of 22:52, 10 seconds behind winner Danetta Ross of Tahlequah. Starks finished first in the 30-34 age group.
Other winners included Owen Wafford of Colcord, who finished first in the male 30-34 age group with a time of 21:36. Danny Tanner of Jay won the 40-44 age group with a time of 22:26. Becky Lamont won the 35-39 age group on the women’s side with a time of 27:58, while Marie Odle of Kansas won the 60-64 age group with a time of 40:40.
