The Ridgerunners girls cross country team finished in 10th place at the state 5k competition Saturday, Oct. 28 out of the 40 school competing.
Grove came into this year as an unranked school and was not expected to perform as well as they did.
The last time the Ridgerunners went to state in cross country was in 2012 where they boys placed 6th and the girls placed 8th.
Bishop Kelley took first place with an average time of 20:29.53 and Grove came in with an average time of 22:26.69.
Placement in the event is not based on top time but the finishing position of your top five runners.
Running position is averaged to determine overall team position for the final results.
“We run in the toughest conference in the state with the first four runners coming out of our region and conference," Cross-country coach Warren Brumley said. "It’s extremely difficult but when you’re running against tough people it makes you better.”
Grove High School competes in the Metro Lakes conference and runs in the north east region.
"Four out of seven of our girls have a 4.0 GPA and our team average is 3.77," Brumley said, adding he's looking to leverage the accomplishments made by cross country.
"It’s going to carry to track, some of these girls don’t take days off and others see it," he said.
While they don’t practice specifically for cross country in the off season many of the runners are returning for track which starts training mid-November.
All of the girls will be running track and will be split amongst the 400 meter, 800 meter, one mile and two mile races.
