Lady Red won at home against Claremore Sequoyah 12-4 on Monday, Sept. 25, to clinch the first place finish in the districts.

The Grove softball team finishes the season 13-1 in the 4A-6 district and an overall season record of 28-8.

Second place fell to Oologah-Talala with an 11-3 record followed by Miami with a 9-5 record for third.

Because of their first place finish and a smaller number of teams competing in the district playoffs, the Lady Red were awarded a bye week which sends them straight to regionals.

Big Red will host Regionals this year - the first time regionals have taken place in Grove since 2012 - when the team went on to win its third fast pitch softball state title going 3-2 against Chickasha.

Regional games are expected to start on Wednesday Oct. 4, with the lineup coming by Monday.

Coach Jeremy Collins said because of the bye week, this team is missing a chance to keep playing.

Because of this, Collins said, he has arranged some games for his team against Webb City (Missouri) in order to keep them playing before entering into regionals.

Behind the win

Katie Bunch pitched for the Lady Red throwing a total of 21 first pitch strikes in seven innings boasting a WHIP of 1.14 but did not have any strikeouts compared to 11 by Claremore.

Grove’s game against Claremore started off a little rocky with the girls falling behind at the top of the second with a homerun from the Lady Eagles starting the game out 0-1.

During the top of the third a two run homer by the Eagles pitcher Kayleigh Jones gave them a three run lead over the Lady Red.

The first hit of the game by Grove came from Ava Sarwinski in the third followed by a double from Mikalle Pair, a triple with two RBIs by Lacy Rowe to get the team rolling.

The girls put a total of four runs on the board in the third taking the lead back from Claremore.

The Eagles tied the game up in the fifth with an RBI bringing them back into the game.

Grove had an outstanding sixth inning scoring - an additional eight runs - bringing the final score of the game to 12-4.

Three girls had two RBIs during their at bats in the inning with a single base hit for Emma Fields, a double for Blaise Redus and a triple for Elizabeth Cash.

The Lady Red have more than a week to prepare for their first game of regionals. Schedules are expected to be submitted on Monday Oct. 2 before end of the work day.
