The Jay Bulldogs pulled ahead in the fourth quarter of the Delaware County Bowl to win over the Grove Ridgerunners 35-21 at Jay.
Grove had won the last three DelCo bowls. If they had been able to pull off a win it would have made their graduating seniors undefeated.
The last time Jay won was in 2013 beating Grove 13-9.
The Ridgerunners were the receiving team to start the game in a packed stadium.
Grove’s first drive brought the ball to Jays 20 yard line but a missed field goal attempt denied them an early lead.
Neither team was able to score in the first quarter but a fumble by the Bulldogs allowed Grove to score on the drive with 11:50 remaining in the second quarter.
The first touchdown followed by a missed extra point brought the score 6-0 in favor of the Ridgerunners.
The Bulldogs quickly answered back with a score of their own at 9:00 in the second quarter taking a lead of 7-6 over the Ridgerunners.
On their next possession in the second quarter, Ridgerunners quarterback Davis Dills threw a touchdown pass to Toby Cearley followed by a two point conversion by Jonas Chaney giving them the lead 14-7.
Cearley made an interception during the next drive with 3:32 left in the second giving grove the ball.
With 33.2 seconds left in the first half Jay intercepted the pass near the 50 yard line.
On the next play after shaking off three Ridgerunners defenders Bulldogs quarterback Gabe Simpson threw a 48 yard touchdown pass to younger brother Daylon Simpson tying the game 14-14.
The Ridgerunners held the Bulldogs for most of the third quarter but Gabe Simpson made a three yard touchdown run followed by an extra point with 18.2 seconds left on in the quarter bringing the score to 21-14 in favor of Jay.
Ridgerunners began the fourth quarter drive with pass to Cearley which was bobbled and recovered in air by Clift despite the Bulldog defenders, and ran the ball to the 18 yard line.
Dills then ran for a one yard touchdown with the extra point tying the game again at 21-21 at 9:32 in the fourth quarter.
During the next drive by the Bulldogs, Simpson threw a 57 yard touchdown pass to Brendon Ryan giving a 28-21 lead over Grove.
Grove had two interceptions resulting in turnovers which allowed the Bulldogs to score a six yard touchdown with 2:19 left in the game resulting in the final score of 35-21.
Dills completed six of 25 passing attempts for a total of 204 yards with one touchdown compared to Simpson who was 15 out of 28 for 361 yards with two touchdowns.
Dills made 22 rushes for 127 scoring two touchdowns against Simpson who rushed 12 for 150 yards and one touchdown.
Grove’s top receivers are Cearley with 2 receptions for 69 yards followed by Chaney with two receptions at 63 yards and Matt Amos with three receptions for 60 yards.
The Ridgerunners ran a total of 80 plays for 420 yards while the Bulldogs ran 55 plays for 460 yards
Turnovers for the Ridgerunners came out to six total with two for the Bulldogs.
This brings the Jay Bulldogs to 3-0 for the current season.
The Ridgerunners continue their season with an 0-2 record. They open play at home at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15, against Stillwell. Gates open at Ridgerunner Stadium at least an hour before the game.
