JAY - Leon J. “Butch” Dowdy, 65 years, of Jay, Oklahoma departed this life on Monday, November 3, 2008 at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri.
Leon entered this life on November 17, 1942 in Stella, Missouri, son of the late Leon Earl and Katherine (Patterson) Dowdy. His formative years were spent in the eastern part of McDonald County. He resided in Los Angeles, California for 25 years where he owned and operated Leon’s Transmission Repair Shop. In 1982 he moved to Jay, Oklahoma. On July 6, 1984 he was united in marriage to Yolanda Dick and together they have shared the last 24 years. His most recently employment was with Johnson Sawmill in Spavinaw, Oklahoma. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Mark and Clyde Martin; and a sister, Nelda Stevens.
Leon is survived by his wife, Yolanda Dowdy of the home; four sons, Lloyd Dowdy of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Joseph Dowdy of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Robert “Bobby” Dowdy and wife, Jennifer, of Albany, Georgia and Shane Bonebrake and wife, Amanda, of Jay, Oklahoma; two daughters, Janette Dowdy of Las Vegas, Nevada and Leann Morton of Bristow, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren; one great granddaughter; four brothers, Jerry Patterson of the state of Washington, Bob Martin of Noel, Missouri, John Dowdy of Jay, Oklahoma and Allen Martin of Lanagan, Missouri; four sisters, Sandra Richardson of Anderson, Missouri, Janet Williams of Southwest City, Missouri, Debbie Anderson of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Jane Self of Clarksville, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services for Leon J. Dowdy are 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Mt. Hermon Church near Jay, Oklahoma with Pastor Garland Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Robert Dowdy, Joe Dowdy, Steven Dowdy, Joey Dowdy, Chris Bale and Justin Teehee. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Southwest City Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes.
