“Ernie” Gates of Big Falls, Minn., died peacefully at his home on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008. Ernie was 69 years of age.
He was born in 1938 in International Falls and grew up at Gates’ Corner just west of Big Falls. He moved into Big Falls in 1949 and has lived in Big Falls since. He was united in marriage to the former Darlene Nelson. Ernie was proud of being an independent logger and truck driver.
Ernie loved hunting, Ice fishing, four-wheeling, spending time at “Charlie’s” Shack at Gates’ Corner with his wife and family. He was a Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan and would often comment on there playing abilities. He was a five year cancer survivor. He attended Gemmell Community Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Anna (Flugal) Gates; a sister Lois Holmquist; and an infant brother Ernest Gates.
Ernie is survived by his wife Darlene; children, Anita (Bob) Goodell and their children, Ashley, Denise, and Brandon, Julie (Douglas) Doxsee and their son Riley, Scott (Sheri) Gates and their children, Andy, Aaron, Austin, and Danyele, Michael (Candace) Gates and their children, Chelsey and Haylee and stepdaughter Heidi (Corey) Watson and their children; Hawken, Aurora, and Chase. Special children in Ernie’s life, Pamela (Brad) Hiemenz and their children Billie Jo, Katie and Sam, Terry (Karen) Baird, Barb Baird, and Brenda (Dan) Sursely; brother Leroy Gates of St. Cloud, Minn.; sisters Joyce Gates of Denver, Colo. and Beverly Ranisate, of Aurora, Minn. along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the Big Falls Community Building with visitation two hours prior to services on Saturday Jan. 26, 2008. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Big Falls, Minnesota at a later date.
