JAY - Charles Q. L. “Lefty” Melton was born July 6, 1916 to Charles Franklin Melton and Joella Carey Melton in Grove, Oklahoma. Lefty attended Jay schools and graduated from high school in 1935.
Lefty served in the Armed Forces during World War II. He married Margaret Brown in 1947, and lived in Jay all his married life. Lefty worked as a lake patrol officer for the City of Tulsa at Lake Eucha. He retired and then served his community and church in many capacities. He served as church treasurer, usher, on the building committee, on the mission committee, as a Sunday school teacher, and many more facets at First Baptist Church for over 60 years. He served as City Councilman from 1984 to 2001. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid sports fan, He was on the first Jay High School Basketball Team to win a trophy, and played several other sports including football and baseball. In his later years spent many days driving over the county admiring the countryside and all the changes in the last 92 years. Lefty’s greatest joy came from being with his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of the home; three children: Gary Brown and wife of Decatur, Arkansas; Beverly Jones, of Grove, Oklahoma; and Charles Melton of Jay, Oklahoma. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, two nephews, Harold Melton of Arlington Texas, and Larry Melton of Yukon, Oklahoma a niece, Cleva (Melton) Edenborough, of Guymon, Oklahoma and a host of friends and family.
He was proceeded in death by two brothers, and his parents.
Services were 11:00 AM Saturday January 17, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Jay, Ok. Interment followed at the Duffield Cemetery, Jay, Ok. Services were entrusted to Funeral Services of Grand Lake of Jay. Online condolences may be left at www.funeralservicesofgrandlake.com
