Marilyn Payne, resident of rural Afton, died at home, Sept. 5, 2009, after a brief illness. She was 69. Mrs. Payne was born Aug. 27, 1940, at Ft. Calhoun, NE., to Dale and Maxine (Dennison) Calkins. She was a cook at Drake’s Restaurant in Grove for 20 years. She married Don Payne on May 10, 1957, at St. Joseph, MO. She moved to Afton 20 years ago, coming from Colorado. She was of the Christian faith. She is survived by her husband, Don, of the home, sons and their wives, Kevin and Linda Payne of Afton, and Kirk and Wendie Payne of Denver, CO., daughter, Kim Payne of Afton; brother Mike Calkins of Kansas City, MO., 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents and sister, Vanda Leonard. Services were at 1:00 p.m., Sep. 8, 2009, at Adcock Funeral Home Chapel in Fairland, with Rev. Lonnie Portenier officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Kevin Payne, Kirk Payne, G. Dyer, Kevin Payne, Jr., and Greg Carroll. Burial was at Fairland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
