Mr. John “The Mayor” Lyle Cooper, age 71, of Felix Rd. Murphy, N.C. passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 8, 2011 following an extended illness.

Mr. Cooper was born on March 7, 1939 in Grove, Okla., the son of the late Jimmy Cooper and the late Mary Katherine Oyler Cooper.  John was a very laid back family man who loved his Lord.  He was fondly called the “Mayor” by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by son, John Lyle Cooper, Jr. on January 28, 2010.  Mr. Cooper was a member of the Assembly of God in Lakeland.

Surviving Mr. Cooper are his loving wife of 21 years, Betty Tyson Cooper of Murphy; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kathy Rudicell of Ark., Angelina and Richard Murray of Fla.; one son and daughter–in-law, James and Candice Roach of N.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-laws, Kenny and Pat Cooper, Grove, Okla., Charles and Sue Cooper of Tahlequah, Okla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Allie Jo and Danny Sherman, Jay, Okla.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family request that memorials may be made to the Leukemia Foundation in memory of Mr. Cooper.
