Arthur Eugene “Rusty” Bishop, 76, of Grove, died Thursday following a brief but difficult battle against cancer.
An Ohio native, Rusty was born March 23, 1932 in Donnelsville, the middle child of Ester and Lester Bishop. Rusty attended local schools and was a graduate ob Bethel High School, class of 1950 Rusty was a gifted athlete who excelled at baseball, basketball, and later golf. In high school he was scouted as a prospect by the Cincinnati Reds baseball organization, and was offered a college baseball scholarship. Instead, Rusty began a plumbing apprenticeship working with his father’s company. Following a sting in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer, Rusty returned to the plumbing business where he worked for many years, including owning and operating his own company. Rusty also worked with the Centerville, Ohio school system, where he retired in 1992. Rusty married Phyllis Poland and they had three children, Richard, Carrie and David. Rusty was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, their youngest son, David, and his older sister, Renee. All through his adult life Rusty enjoyed golf and his love of the game was capped with a hole-in-one on May 2000 in New Carlisle, Ohio. He continued to actively play golf until late 2008. In addition, Rusty was a NASCAR fan, attending many races across America and amassing an outstanding collection of hundreds of miniature cars. A second chance at love came Rusty’s way in the late 1990s when he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Bettie (Crumpler) Kardos, whose home happens to be adjacent to the fourth green of a lovely golf course in Grove. They married on September 9, 1999, and while in Grove, Rusty made numerous and lasting friends. Everyone who was blessed with his friendship and good cheer always found him to be a man of gentle manner whose warm and gracious smile was an introduction to his kind spirit. Rusty is survived by his wife, Bettie Kardos Bishop; his son, Rick Bishop of Dayton, Ohio; his daughter, Carrie Sage of Spring Valley, Ohio; his brother Robert Bishop of Russells Point, Ohio; loving step children, Christopher Kardos, wife Sherry and son Jonathan, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Pamela Kardos-Gordon and husband, Wayne of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; Michael Kardos and wife, Kay, of Los Angeles, California; Gregory Kardos, wife Brenda, and son, Scott, of Midland, Texas; and several grandchildren in Ohio. In addition, Rusty was an active Mason, and for 45 years he was a member of the New Burlington Lodge #0574, Spring Valley, Ohio, and more recently Grove Lodge #187, Scottish Rite of Oklahoma and Akdar Shrine of Tulsa. Memorial celebration of Rusty’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Funeral Services of Grove, 722 North 46th St.
