WARD L. KOONS
AUGUST 25, 1938 - AUGUST 10, 2008
GROVE - Ward L. Koons, 69 of Grove, OK formerly of Scammon, KS died at 6 am Sunday, August 10, 2008 at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born August 25, 1938 in rural Columbus the son of Earl and Pearl (Lopp) Koons. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1956, then went on to receive an Associates degree from Parsons Junior College in 1960.
On August 24, 1959 he was united in marriage to Sharon Pryor in Scammon at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church; she survives him of the home. Ward and Sharon raised their children in Scammon where they lived for 27 years.
Ward began his mining career in 1963 at Mine #19 in Hallowell, KS. He was promoted to Production Superintendent and transferred to the Empire Mine in Asbury, MO, he then transferred to the York Canyon Mine in Raton, NM. After a year of service he transferred to McKinley Mine in Gallup, NM. After 34 years of faithful service he retired and moved with his wife to Grand Lake in Grove, OK.
Ward enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, fishing and spending time with his family. He was a man of principal who stood up for what he believed in. He was liked and respected by many people not only because he made you laugh, but, because he went out of his way to help others. He is most remembered by family for teaching us how to live life with integrity, determination and faith.
Additional survivors include a son Paul and wife Bobbi Koons of Columbus, KS; five daughters: Melinda Dainty and husband Martin of Weir, Becky Auman and husband Stan of Springfield, MO, Sheryl Teel and husband Dean of Columbus, Karen Koons of Rogers, AR and Julie Smith and husband John of Poteau, OK; three brothers: George Koons of Columbus, KS, Mark Koons of Oswego, KS and Terry Koons of Joplin, MO; 13 grandchildren: Erin (Koons) Cheney and husband Jess, Eric Koons, Natalie Koons, Joe Dainty and wife Lydia, David Dainty, Sarah Dainty, Hunter Auman, Hanna Auman, Harper Auman, Makinzie Teel, Andrew Teel, Maggie Teel and Simone Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Bill and Wally Koons and a sister Tiny Earlene.
Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 am, Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church with Fr. Chrysostom Ah Maung as Celebrant. Burial followed in the St. Bridget’s Cemetery. Parish rosary was recited at 6:30 pm Tuesday, August 12 at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon. Visitation followed the rosary.
