Rev. Herschel R. Barnes of Grove, Oklahoma died Sunday September 20, 2009 at Grove Integris Regional Hospital in Grove, Oklahoma. He was 91.
Rev. Barnes was born August 5, 1918 in Afton, Oklahoma to Issac and Lola (Jackson) Barnes. He had lived in the Ottawa County area all his life. He was a farmer and Asst. Manager for Afton Co-op in Afton, Oklahoma. Rev. Barnes was a Baptist minister serving area country churches, including Lone Star Baptist Church for 26 years, Hudson Creek Baptist Church and Lake Center Baptist Church as well as many others. He helped minister to many after his retirement even saving from drug addiction. He and his wife went yearly to Arizona to help build churches on Native American Reservations for 5 years. He was a chaplain for all 3 Grove, Oklahoma nursing homes.
He was preceded in death by his wife Imogene Barnes in 2004.
Survivors include: daughters Ronda Crockett and husband Ronald of Grove, Oklahoma, Ann McKinzie of Tulsa, Oklahoma, brother Waldo Barnes of Afton, Oklahoma, sisters Jean Thulin of Miami, Oklahoma, Colleen Patton state of California, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren
Funeral Services will be Friday, September 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Lone Star Baptist Church, Northeast of Afton, Oklahoma. Rev. Chester Crittenden will officiate. Pallbearers will be Bobby King, Roger Faires, Jim Hayes, Larry Boyd, Lowell Crockett and Melvin Simmons. Interment will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery Northwest of Grove, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home. Services are under the directions of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Miami, Oklahoma.
