Garnett Louise Powell was born June 10, 1929 and joined our Heavenly Father on September 26, 2009.
Garnett was born to Perry and Birdie Godsey in Beggs, Oklahoma and grew up with 5 brothers and sisters. Harold and Reba Boerstler of Duncan, Mary Parker of Tulsa, Ronald and Montie Godsey of Grants Pass, Oregon and was preceded in death by her older brothers Bill Godsey of Tulsa and Jerry Godsey of California.
Soon after World War II, Garnett, “Louise” to those in the family, met and married the eternal love of her life, Samuel Russell Powell. Sam was her strength, guardian and soul mate for 56 beautiful years. When “Sam” passed away in June of 2004, Louise had lost her one true love. Shortly afterwards Louise discovered that she had colon cancer and she boldly underwent chemo treatments for the next 5 years. Calling on the strength that 56 years of love had taught her, she endured several surgeries and throughout all of her treatments, she maintained a kind and loving heart. Often, she would take donuts to those being treated along side of her. Her fortitude and loving heart will be remembered by all who knew her. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Robert Reynolds and his staff for their professional and moral support.
Louise is survived by her sons and their wives. Dannie and Joni Powell of Owasso, Oklahoma Ronnie and Luisa Powell of Slaughterville, Oklahoma; Tom and Cindy Powell of Edmond, Oklahoma. Cindy became the daughter that she never had and it was this relationship that kept her going every day. The family cannot say enough thanks to Cindy for her never tiring support and love for our Mother. Louise loved Cindy dearly and without her daily care, Louise would not have survived as long as she did. It was this love that helped to dampen the sense of loss when Sam passed away. Louise was blessed with 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
During the final days of her life, Louise continued to teach us love, compassion and even humor. With only a few hours to live, when she was asked to give us another smile, Louise’s expression went from a distant stare to one of total animation and an instant loving smile. She knew how to make our day brighter and it is this trait that her son’s and those who knew her will never forget. Mom, go meet your Baby Boy and hold his hand again. He’s been waiting and soon we’ll all be a family together in the Kingdom of Heaven.
