JUNE 1, 1922 - JANUARY 5, 2009

AFTON - Harvey Brewster, resident of Afton, died at Craig General Hospital in Vinita, Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, after an illness.  He was 86.  Mr. Brewster was born June 1, 1922, at Dennis, OK, to Thomas and Addie (Winningham) Brewster. 

He graduated from Grove High School, with the Class of 1939.  He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy Seabees.  After the service, he returned to Afton, where he was self-employed as a barber for 60 years, owning Harvey’s Barber Shop. 

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Afton, the Afton American Legion, and the Welch VFW.  He was also a member of the Afton Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, retiring as chief. 

He married Faye Williams on March 7, 1942, at Joplin, MO.  She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include daughter Terrie Thompson and Mike Campbell of Cleora, a granddaughter and husband, Telly Thompson Stotts and Eddie, of Chelsea, a grandson and wife, 1st Class Petty Officer Devin and Jessica Thompson, of Newport News, VA., four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded by his parents, six brothers, Allen, James, John, Thomas, Clark, and Woodrow Brewster, and a sister, Sarah Reno.

 The funeral was 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at the First Christian Church in Afton, with Ministers Tim McMillan and Rick Kyles officiating. 

Serving as pallbearers will be Grant Victor, Jay Victor, Jerry Chandler, Terry Miller, James Fuser, and Tommy Lee Bassett.  Honorary pallbearers will be Melvin Birks, John White, Francis Maloney, and Dale Overton. 

Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery.  Military honors were  performed by the American Legion Post 147 Funeral Detail.

 In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund.
