DEWEY - Joyce Delores O’Connell, 84, died at 10:40 AM on Thursday in the Medicalodge of Dewey.
The Rosary for Joyce was held on Monday, January 12 at 7:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 109 West 5th Street , Skiatook , Oklahoma with Father Khiet Nguyen officiating. The Funeral Mass was recited at 9:00 AM Tuesday, January 13th in the St. John Catholic Church with Father Festus Maliwa officiating. Also a memorial service was held at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, January 20 at the Medicalodge Nursing Center with Chaplain Ron Stone of Carter Hospice officiating. Funeral services and cremation are under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mrs. O’Connell was born January 13, 1924 at Crescent City , California to Frederick W. and Annette Louise ( Jordan ) Endert. She was raised and received her education in Crescent City graduating high school there in 1943. She was married to Robert T. O’Connell in 1943 in Crescent City , California . They moved several times in Northern California after their marriage where Mr. O’Connell, a Civil Engineer, designed and built landing strips along the west coast for the U.S. Military among many other projects. They later made their home in Marin County , California .
Mrs. O’Connell began her career as a swimming instructor in 1957 teaching and coaching competitive swimming in Marin. She taught classes for American Red Cross, Y.M.C.A. and several private clubs. She was instrumental in teaching the handicapped, blind and disabled. She taught mommy & me classes and Senior arthritis exercise classes. She swam competitively at the National Senior Olympics in 1990 representing Oklahoma in Syracuse , New York . She came home with 2 Bronze medals, freestyle and backstroke, and one Silver medal in breaststroke.
She retired in 1999 from her position with Shangri-La on Monkey Island at Grand Lake as Aquatic Director. With the change in her health and the passing of her husband she moved to Dewey , Oklahoma . She lived at the Medicalodge at Dewey for 5 1/2 years as well as Alterra Sterling House for 3 1/2 years.
Survivors include two daughters; Katharine Wiley and her husband Roger of Hominy, Oklahoma and Paula O’Connell of San Francisco , California ; one son Timothy O’Connell and his wife, Janis of Novato, California; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. O’Connell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert T. O’Connell in 2000 and her daughter Maureen Soltero in 1993.
