BETTE JEANNE DUNCAN

BURLINGTON - Betty Jeanne Duncan, 83, of Burlington, died at 11:40 a.m. on Friday, July 4, 2008 in Great River Medical Center.
Born on December 15, 1924 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Robert and Adalene Tracey Paxson.
She married Junior M. “Sparky” Duncan on March 9, 1945 in Memphis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on October 30, 1996.
Betty was a 1942 graduate of Burlington High School and attended the College of Commerce in Burlington. She worked as a Billing Clerk, Claim Agent and Secretary for Arledge Transfer for 20 years. She then worked as Office Manager for Casebine Credit Union until her retirement in 1980.
After a winter in Texas, she and her husband settled in Grove, Oklahoma on a lakefront lot with their own year-round fishing dock. In June of 1995, due to her husband’s health, they moved to Anniston, Alabama. They enjoyed their time in Alabama just over a year, until her husband’s death. Betty longed for her hometown, causing her to return to Burlington in 1999.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Golden Oldies, Sweet Adalines, the Silver Singers, and was a former member of the King’s Daughters Sheldon #2.
She enjoyed Big Band music, playing Pinnacle, BINGO, crossword puzzles, and Iowa Hawkeye Football and Basketball.
Survivors include two sons; Gerald “Jerry” Duncan of Oxford, Alabama and Steve Duncan of West Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren Kerry Hale of West Burlington, Sarah Knight of Solon, Iowa, and Betsy Duncan of Des Moines; three great grandchildren, Riley, Austin, and Gable; and one sister Janace Woodside of Sioux City, Iowa.
Her parents, husband, an infant son Warren, and one sister Barbara preceded her in death.
Funeal service was on Monday, July 7, 2008 at 2:00 PM in Lunning Chapel with Reverend Trevor Davis officiatiating. Inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Betty’s memory to the St. Labre Indian School, 1000 Tongue River Rd., Ashland, Montana 59004
