JULY 14, 1921 - MARCH 24, 2008

VINITA - Marjorie Lee Tawney, 86 year old  resident of Vinita, passed away Monday morning at the Craig General Hospital.

Mrs. Tawney was born in Renick, Missouri on July 14, 1921.  She was a graduate of Moberly, Missouri High School and Moberly College.  As a young woman she was an avid tennis player and ice skater.  She was the only woman in her peer group that would ice skate on a frozen pond in the cold winters of Northern Missouri.

She and her sister Velma played on the same basketball team and were affectionately called the “Coureton Sisters” by their classmates.  She would tell of loading her parents Model T car with the team and traveling to play other schools.  She moved to Vinita in 1954 from Moberly, Missouri.  Together with her husband Bruce they operated the Twins Drive-In for 13 years on North Wilson Street in Vinita.

She stayed very active until her life was interrupted by a serious illness.  She truly believed that God, family and friends were her sustaining factors.

Mrs. Tawney was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, her parents Charles and Beulah Coureton, and her sister, Mrs. Velma Sauer.

The family of Mrs. Marjorie Tawney includes two children:  Mrs. Lois Luginbuel and her husband Jack of Vinita and Jerry Tawney and his wife Jeanne of Grove.  There are four grandchildren:  Sheila Dills and her husband Joey of Tulsa, David Luginbuel and his wife Kathleen of Bartlesville, Nancy Qualkenbush and her husband Jeff of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Mace Tawney and his wife Amy of Centennial, Texas.  There are three great-grandchildren:  Annie Dills, Noah Tawney and Zachary Tawney.
