The Grove Public School Board of Education reviewed a preliminary construction time line for the improvements to the existing school campuses.
According to plans set forth by Hight-Jackson Associates, PA construction on the Middle School will begin in early March and construction at the Lower Elementary will begin in early April. The Upper Elementary and High School portions of the construction are set to begin in May. Pre-K construction, along with various other portions of the projects at other sites will be done over summer break.
The construction projects include cafeteria, classroom and administrative additions at the Lower Elementary; the demolition of an abandoned portion of the building and a new cafeteria and classroom addition at the Upper Elementary; a classroom addition, canopy, mansard and re-roofing and window replacement at the Middle School; the remodeling of a bathroom at the Early Childhood Center, and a classroom addition, building re-coating and new corridor floor finishes at the High School.
The board also voted to approve an asbestos abatement contract.
Gary Jackson, of Hight-Jackson explained that asbestos abatement must be performed in two or three of the buildings before any construction projects can begin at those facilities.
“It is a very controlled process,” Jackson said. “Some of the buildings in question are unoccupied, but the occupied ones will have to be done when students aren’t present.”
The last of the construction work is projected for completion by summer vacation 2011.
Jackson said the Middle School portion of the project has to be ready by August 2010.
School Board members will meet three prospective construction managers for the project at the January meeting, which will begin at 6:00 in the Middle School Library, Tuesday, January 12th.
