JAY – Members of the Delaware County Public Facilities Authority met in Jay on July 24 to discuss election strategies concerning the funding of a new Delaware County Detention Center to be located in Jay.

Members of the committee went over and approved a brochure that the committee will be passing out throughout the communities of Delaware County, to answer questions concerning the proposed facility.

Questions addressed on the brochure include:

• Why does the county need a new jail?

• Where will it be located?

• What will be the key features of the new jail?

• How much will it cost?

• How will we pay for it?

• How much will the additional sales tax be?

• How long will the sales tax run?

• Doesn’t Delaware County currently levy a county sales tax?

• Why wasn’t an increase in property taxes proposed?

• When would the new jail open?

• When is the sales tax election?

• Where do I vote?

• How can I get more information?

• What will happen if the vote fails?

The final draft of the brochure should be out soon.

The authority has set three main meetings where Spirit Architecture will present a power-point program to those interested in attending.

The first meeting will be held in Kansas, OK at the Vo-Tech on July 31 starting at 7 p.m. The second meeting will be on August 7 at 7 p.m. at the Jay Community Center and the final meeting will be in the Grove Community Center on August 8 at 6 p.m.

So far the authority has held small meeting throughout Delaware County and will continue to do so until the election date set for August 26.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend these informational meetings.
