Preliminary reports allege a meth lab explosion destroyed a home and caused damage to a garage in Cleora Saturday night.  The home on 4540 Road in Red Arrow was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Bernice, Monkey Island, Hickory Grove and Cleora Fire as well as the Delaware County Sheriff's office reported to the 10:30 p.m. call.

Neighbors claim that they were in the garage across the street when they heard a loud pop.  When they went across the street to see what was happening the house was already on fire.  They heard three more pops before yelling to see if anyone was inside and the home became fully engulfed.

“The home has been unoccupied for almost a year,” said Delaware County Sheriff Ron Teel.  There was no power to the home.

“Neighbors need to be reminded that just like if neighbors go on vacation, if you see something out of the ordinary, you need to call us or your local law enforcement agency,” said Teel.

Bernice Fire Chief Patrick Beehler added, “If a house is on fire, people need to stay away.  You never know what is in others homes, and what toxic chemicals have made their way into the smoke and can be dangerous to breathe.”

“The fire was under control very quickly thanks to the mutual aid of the other departments and the ability we have to work so well together,” said Beehler.
