The return of the BIG Grove football helmet will happen tonight at 7:30 PM at Ridgerunner Stadium as Grove opens district play against Tulsa McLain.
Marvin Doke and his staff at First Class Collision spent the summer days re-tooling the old symbol of football excellence and, along with some help from others, have “tricked-out” the helmet to a modern standard.
“We took it all apart and sanded it down,” said Doke of the helmet. “Then we painted the helmet itself and then sanded down the facemask, rebuilt it, and painted it.”
The task or re-assembling all of the refurbished pieces was made easier with some generous donations from other local businesses.
“We put some new wheels on it that were donated by Zap Plumbing and the new tires were donated by Grand Outdoors. All of the vinyl and graphics for the helmet were donated by Universal Images,” Doke said.
When asked how many hours were involved in preparing the helmet Doke laughed and said, “Lots!”
“It was kind of a summer project and we wanted to get it ready for the new season,” said Doke.
The helmet will be at Ridgerunner Stadium tonight and makes an awesome photo-prop for Ridgerunner fans of all ages. The helmet will also serve as a notice of the prominence and success of the Grove football teams, and the school district as a whole.
