Twenty-two students from local high school waxed poetic Thursday night at the Grove Community Center, as they vied for cash and accolades.
Six students walked away with prizes provided by the local chapter of Vietnam vets.
First place, won by Ronny Grunwald, was $200; second place, won by Rachel Madison, was $100; third place, won by Jamie Lee Billings, was $75; fourth place, won by Joshua Chapman, was $50; fifth place, won by Ethan Walden, was $25; and sixth place, won by Christina Livingston, was $10.
Emceed by local poet and Vietnam veteran Robert Springer, the annual event drew poetry students from as far as Commerce and McDonald County, Missouri.
Students read original work and were judged on delivery, poetic style, originality, and content.
“It was very difficult to choose the winners,” said judge and local poet, Susan Moritz. “Every poem had merit.”
The Grove Poetry Group meets at Java Dave’s in downtown Grove on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. for an open mic reading. Everyone is welcome to attend.
