The Grove Poetry Group will go back to its beginnings for the New Year, holding its first open mic meeting at the Rheingarten Restaurant on Main St. in Grove Thursday night, January 8th.
Poetry Maven Judy Sadler started the group ten years ago at the urging of some of her online poet friends.
Since then local poets and poetry aficionados have been gathering once a month to share their love of language.
The group is an eclectic gathering of poets, from the silly to the sublime.
“You name it, we have someone who does it,” Sadler said.
The return to the Rheingarten in 2009 marks a homecoming of sorts for the group. Though the first open mics were held at Sadler’s home, by the third or fourth meeting, the group was gathering at the restaurant.
The erstwhile poets continued to meet there for about six years before moving their meetings to the now defunct Tucker’s Book Store and then Java Dave’s.
After ten years, the poets have come full circle.
“We are especially appreciative that they have allowed us to come back after all these years,” Sadler said.
“I think we’ll have a really good year this year,” she added.
Everyone is welcome to attend the open mic readings – to read or simply listen.
“We are very supportive of everyone who comes,” Sadler said.
The open mic begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Rheingarten Restaurant, this Thursday, January 8th, and will be held on the first Thursday of every month, same time, same place, for the rest of the year. There is a $3.00 cover charge, which includes soft drinks and coffee.
Participants are urged to come early and sample to the fine German cuisine.
In March, the group will take time out from its usual open mic to sponsor a performance poetry contest for area high school students. The contest will be held at the Grove Community Center on the first Thursday of March and will feature cash prizes for the winners. Entry forms will be available at all area high schools.
