JAY –Employees and prisoners were evacuated from the Delaware County Courthouse Friday after smoke filled the women’s cell of the Delaware County Jail.
Employees were evacuated and prisoners were relocated around 1:25 p.m. Friday.
Jay Fire Department arrived on the scene and officers were called to the jail to move the prisoners to a safe area.
According to officials, a motor on one of the air conditioning units, located on top of the building, had locked up and a belt continued to turn, causing smoke to be drawn through the ductwork into the women’s cell.
The scene was cleared within minutes and no county officer, employee or prisoner sustained any injury.
