A Jay man was killed Sunday morning on State Highway 20 in Delaware County after stopping to help a couple who had been involved in an accident, according to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Peter R. Holland, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene from massive injuries after being struck by an automobile, the report said.
Holland had stopped to help Carl Cunningham, 58, and Rita Cunningham, 58, both of Grove after their southbound vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway, and struck a tree.
Carl Cunningham was transported to Integris Grove General Hospital with arm and leg injuries where he was treated and released.
Rita Cunningham was also transported to Integris Grove with head, internal trunk and leg injuries. She was listed in good condition.
Holland was struck when a southbound vehicle driven by Timothy Eyres, 54, failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the right side of the road. After striking Holland, the vehicle struck a fence, the patrol said.
According to the report, it was raining and the road was wet at the time of the accidents.
