With membership at the Grand Lake Family YMCA up nearly 30 percent over the last quarter, fall programs for adults, youth and children are scheduled to begin in the next couple of months.
According to YMCA executive director Butch Christy, 54 new membership units have been added in the last three months bringing total units to 233. (A membership unit may be a family of five or one individual.)
“Not only will programs like the Kid’s Club, Fall Soccer, Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball and Summer Day Camp continue, but there are new programs in the planning stage,” said Christy. “Now is still a great time to join as we continue to waive joiner dues for just a short time longer.”
Christy also invited Grand Lake residents and visitors to view the model of the potential YMCA facility in the area.
“We’re also eager to tell people about our contributing membership program: A tax deductive contribution of $30 per month or $360 per year can be used to sponsor a YMCA family membership. This is a great way to help out less fortunate families and give them access to the character-building programs here at the YMCA.”
According to board member Tom Sanders, the increased membership is crucial as Y leadership seeks to expand facilities and services.
“We know the community is eager to see a traditional YMCA facility because of its support of the Founders Campaign that generated the funding to bring us this far,” Sanders said. “However, unless people invest in the Y concept through membership, that dream will not become a reality.”
According to Sanders, once sufficient membership units are achieved, a capital campaign will follow to construct a YMCA facility.
“Through the YMCA feasibility study conducted in 2005, a pool was identified as the highest community priority,” said Sanders. “Our desire is to build a facility that will potentially house a lap swimming area, a wellness pool, steam rooms, jacuzzis, locker rooms and offices.”
Property for the Y has already been donated on the southeast corner of 18th street and Shundi.
YMCA memberships are $20 per month for seniors; $25 for adults and $30 for a family. For further information and to demonstrate your support, call 786-5774 or visit the YMCA behind Pizza Hut in Grove.
