The Playmakers will hold auditions for three youth productions during the first week in June.
Two of the plays will be performed during the first two weekends in August, and the third will tour surrounding counties in the fall.
“Our comprehensive youth theatre program is keeping all of us very busy,” said Artistic Director of The Playmakers, Suzanne Boles. “But it’s very exciting when all the planning finally begins to take on a life of its own. We just performed ‘Wiley & the Hairy Man’ for all GPS fifth grade classes. It had been in rehearsal since January. We’re still in rehearsal for ‘The Love For Three Oranges,’ the play that will be presented May 1st as part of the GPS sixth grade curriculum on Commedia dell’Arte. We’re already working on the youth plays for the summer and fall. And, plans are underway for the initiation of the after-school program next fall.”
Students from six-years-old through high school can get in on some imaginative fun this summer.
Auditions are at The Playmakers, 121 W. 3rd St, Grove. For further details call 918-786-8950, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Totally Red” auditions are June 2, 7:00 pm. The play is a unique re-telling by Dinah Toups and Barbara Walker, in multiple theatrical styles from hip hop to Shakespeare, of the classic battle of wit and deception between the big bad wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. We meet Red (who’s nobody’s fool) and the wolf (who tries to be cool) and granny—well, sometimes she’s left in the dark! One of the ‘styles” requires singing. In addition to performing in August, it is hoped that pieces of this play—a few of the ‘styles’—can be performed earlier for community organizations and events.
“By distributing roles throughout the various ‘styles,’ we can incorporate younger actors,” said director, Sandy McCabe.
“The Dinosaur Musical” with music by Robert Reale, and book and lyrics by Willie Reale, takes place at the end of the Cretaceous period. It’s a madcap, jazzy prehistoric musical comedy that can entertain the whole family. It even tells the “true story” of the invention of spaghetti. Auditions are June 5 at 7:00 pm. Help will be needed with dinosaur costumes! Co-directors are Suzanne Boles and Ashley Davidson. The play can use a big cast, and is fun for boys! More information will be available about types of singing voices needed a few weeks prior to the auditions.
“The Secret Life of Girls” by Linda Daugherty, is for mid-school girls only. Auditions are June 3 at 7:00 pm. It is a candid, stark look at peer pressure, self-abuse, bullying and finding one’s own value.
“We want to tour this play to area schools and organizations in the fall,” said director, Sandy McCabe. “We hope parents will attend and stay for the discussions with students that will follow the play.”
It will also be the production that will be included in The Playmakers’ 7th grade in-school theatre curriculum in the fall.
