JAY – Members of the Delaware County Public Facilities Authority met Wednesday afternoon to discuss a plan of action to promote passage of the sales tax, which will be on the Jan. 13, 2009 ballot.
The sales tax has been proposed to fund the housing of Delaware County prisoners in the Ottawa County Jail.
Both Delaware and Ottawa county commissioners have signed a contract allowing Delaware County twenty beds in the Ottawa County facility at a cost of $31.50 per prisoner per day.
The authority is now asking voters to pass a .1% sales tax increase to fund the cost.
The proposal will be on the ballot in January along with a motel/hotel tax that the City of Grove is asking voters to pass. Election costs will be shared by both entities.
Authority members discussed methods of informing the voters, making them aware of the issue and the election.
Several promotional options were discussed, including newspaper and television coverage.
Flyers and mail-outs were vetoed due to lack of funding and time.
The authority also approved their regularly scheduled meetings for 2009.
Members also approved a motion for the group to meet quarterly in the upcoming year. The dates for those meetings include January 7, April 1, July 1 and Oct. 7 all starting at 2 p.m. in the Commissioners office of the Delaware County Courthouse.
