JAY – An accident involving a Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputy resulted in the death of the driver of a motorcycle Friday afternoon.

Jeffrey Drake, 25, of Chelsea, Okla. was pronounced dead at the scene on State Highway 28 and County Road 550 approximately five miles west and two miles North of Jay at 3:20 p.m. Friday.

According to Oklahoma Highway Patrolman Jeremy Franz, a 2003 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Drake was driving eastbound and a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Kauffman, 75, was headed westbound when the motorcycle crossed the centerline into the path of the car and collided, ejecting Drake approximately 12 feet from the point of impact. Deputy Kauffman was uninjured.

Witnesses to the accident claim that Drake, along with another motorcycle rider, were driving at speeds in excess of the speed limit at the time of the accident.

Drake was reported to have been wearing a helmet, according to the trooper’s report.

Patrolman Franz was joined in the investigation by Troopers Ben Bertram, and Colby Overstreet as well as Lt. Roger Starling and Capt. Jack McCoy.
