Spring cleaning is underway as Grand Lake recovers from the record snowfall this past winter. Kevin Roberts, also known as “Scuba Steve” on the lake, is the owner of R and R Boat Recovery.
“We’ve brought up about a dozen boats so far,” said Roberts,
Diving with zero visibility and in 40 degree water makes his job not only difficult, but dangerous too.
“I have a very dangerous job. Each boat is different and you never know what is going to happen,” he said.
To bring a boat to the surface, Roberts attaches air bags and then starts pumping water out, checking for leaks and holes.
“We use absorbent booms to contain all fluids, gas, diesel fuel, oil, etc. It costs us about $1,000 per boat to do the containment process, but it’s important to make sure those fluids don’t get into the lake. We do anything we can to prevent that from happening,” he said.
“Each boat takes about six hours and costs $150 per boat foot,” said Roberts.
