ZENA – A 4 year-old boy lost his life in an early morning fire Monday that destroyed the family home.
Fire Departments from Jay, Eucha, Grove and Zena were alerted at 8:20 a.m. and responded to the flame-engulfed mobile home, which belonged to Jackson Brewer.
The home was located 1.25 miles west of Highway 59, on Highway. 127.
According to authorities with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, officers and family members attempted to rescue the mother and her three children, who were all in the home at the time of the blaze.
A neighbor, Mike White, managed to get the mother and her eight-month-old baby out of the home and rescued the two-year-old by tossing the child from a window to the mother.
Rescuers were unable to get to the four-year old, who died at the scene.
Emergency medical personnel from both Jay and Grove came to the location and treated White for burns to his scalp, which he sustained during the rescue.
All three surviving family members were transported to Integris Grove General Hospital where they were treated and released.
Also on the scene were the State Fire Marshall and the Medical Examiner’s office.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and will be determined by the State Fire Marshall.
The local Red Cross chapter has stepped in and is helping the family at this time.
