AFTON - Icy road conditions contributed to several accidents including the death of a Tulsa man on the Will Rogers Turnpike, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Renard J. Johnson, Jr., 21, died at the scene from massive injuries, the patrol said.† He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Monday near the Afton exit.

According to the patrol, Johnson was driving westbound on I44 when he attempted to overtake a tractor-trailer and slid out of control and into its path.†

Johnsonís car was hit by the tractor-trailer and then ran off the right side of road and overturned once, the patrol said.† Johnson was ejected through the driverís side window approximately 161 feet, the patrol said.†

Robert S. Brown, 61, of Springfield, Mo., was not injured.

A second accident was reported at 2:50 about two miles north of Vinita on State Highway 2.

Peggy Jones, 40, of Bluejacket was transported to Craig County General Hospital in fair condition with head and internal injures. Danny M. Knight, 41, of Las Vegas, Nevada was treated and released.

According to the patrol Jones was northbound when she hit an icy patch on the highway and lost control and hit Knight head-on.
