DELAWARE COUNTY - Voters decided Tuesday to nix an increase in sales tax that would have funded a new detention center for Delaware County.

According to the unofficial election results, 2,214 of voters voted against the proposition as opposed to 1,648 voters who in favor.

Those numbers translate to a win of 57.33% over 42.67% of those voting.

Election board officials said the voter turnout was low with only 16.52% of the 23,382 registers voters casting a ballot, and especially in the southern county precincts.

Precincts in Grove, Monkey Island, Cleora, Bernice and Zena took the high numbers in opposition, while Jay and southern county precincts were in favor of the .50% sales tax increase.
