Jay’s Lighthouse Pregnancy Center’s annual dinner and silent auction fundraiser will take place at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the RFC Event Center in Jay.

Volunteers at Lighthouse Pregnancy Center has served the community and surrounding areas more than 13 years, since August 2005.

The evening program is a major source of funds to cover operational costs for the organization throughout the year.

They provide pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting skills classes, mentor programs just to name some of the services offered at no charge to their clients.

These programs are available to everyone regardless of background, in a comfortable, non-judgemental and non-threatening atmosphere.

Additionally, Lighthouse Pregnancy Center has offered abstinence education to high schools in the area including: Moseley, Grove, Jay, Kansas, Oaks Mission, Kenwood and Wyandotte.

Their abstinence education program is called S.H.A.R.E., an acronym for Sexual Health Awareness Prevention and Education.

The keynote speaker for the evening will be nationally acclaimed model, actress, singer, dancer and speaker Lakita Garth Wright.

Wright is a graduate of the University of Southern California and a former Miss Black California.

According to the Ambassadors Speaker Bureau, "She has been a model for Nike and Reebok and has appeared in numerous commercials and television shows including The View, Tyra Banks, Bill O’Reilly, Inside Edition, The Morning Show, Joy Behar, Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect, Focus on the Family’s Mind Over Media, BET, MTV and toured with her rap group on MTV’s “Rock the Vote” tour."

Key in Wright’s name on the internet and a number of YouTube videos come up where she argues strongly, clearly and intelligently about the reasons teens should wait until marriage for sex.

Many studies, such as the Pew study, have shown those couple who have waited until marriage to have sex have a richer and more fulfilling sex life and a longer lasting marriage.

One of her oft made quotes is “’I do’ means ‘I do you’, ‘You do me’ and ‘You don’t do nobody else’.”

The Bureau added "She has also been featured in several magazines including People, ESSENCE, Seventeen, Vogue, Vibe, Gospel Today, and Charisma.

"Wright has addressed millions of teenagers through motivational assemblies across the United States and internationally.

"As a recognized expert, she has testified before the U.S. Surgeon General and the U.S. Senate on teen pregnancy prevention, HIV and women of color, the Impact of Media on Adolescence, and Shifting Adolescent Social Norms.

"Additionally, she has also been a voting member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences."

When asked what message she had for parents she responded: “Most parents don’t have a clue how crazy it is, what is out there and the messages continually coming across social media.

“This is a crisis”

She said by the time a sexually active teen hits 20, more than half of them will have at least one STI and many will have multiple STI’s.

“The scary things is that some of the more common sexual diseases have built up immunities to the antibiotics used to treat them, causing permanent damage and infertility," she said.

So many teens have responded “What, no one told us that” when she brought up these facts.

Wright also had words for our churches, that they should be taking the lead in teaching our kids about sex.

“If the church or parents don’t do it, then there are others waiting to fill the void.”

She added that parents and the church need to “model sexual integrity.”

She was morethan just words as she didn’t have her first kiss until she married her husband at age 36.

They now have six kids and reside in Chicago, Illinois

Karen Moore, Director of the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center said everyone will be enthralled with Lakita.

She is lively, energetic and you will be blessed by her message and challenge.
