Make a resolution to diet on January 1?

If so, Delaware County Girl Scouts have a plan to make people break even the most diehard decisions.

It's Girl Scout Cookie time.

With the kick-off on Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Grove Community Center, Girl Scouts in Grove, Zena and Jay are hitting the streets taking pre-orders for the delectable treats.

At $5 per box, this year's cookies include Girl Scout S'mores, Lemonades, Thanks-A-Lot, Trios, Carmel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Shortbread and of course, the annual delight, Thin Mints.

This year's cookie sales features a safari theme, with Ella Elephant as the mascot.

Locally, Delaware County girls within Service Unit 705 (Zena - Troop 71606, Jay - Troop 70448, and Grove - 21831) will pre-sale cookies now until Jan. 24. Pre-sold cookies will arrive by President's Day in February, with booth sales taking place around the county in mid-February.

The cookie sales, explained Marla Stidham, local cookie boss, serve as the main fundraiser for the local Girl Scouts. Funding is divided between the girls who sell the cookies - to use for camp, membership fees and uniforms, the local service unit and the local council - in this case the Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland.

Girls can earn up to $300 cookie credit to use for the various camps/fees.

Stidham said last year the service unit sold 16,449 packages. The 2018 goal is 16,813 packages.

During Saturday's kick-off event, participating scouts leaned safety tips including how to "buddy up" and to stay safe while making sales in person and online.

The cookie program sets several goals / standards for the girls including learning to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, responsible for what they say and do, respect for themselves and others, respect of authority, using resources wisely, making the world a better place and to be a sister to every Girl Scout.
