A year ago, Chandler Reiman set out with one goal in mind - to raise funds for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
That effort, which included a hot chocolate stand at his church, brought in more than $500 - well over the initial $50 goal.
This year, the 13-year-old has set a goal to raise $300, but hopes he will surpass $500 once again.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 13, Reiman will staff his hot chocolate stand near the outdoor sign at Grove's First Baptist Church on 13th Street.
During the four hour time period (or until supplies run out) Reiman will once again offer cups of Swiss Miss hot chocolate and marshmallows.
As an added bonus, he plans to also pass out copies of the Tuesday, Jan. 9 and Friday, Jan. 12 issues of The Grove Sun, so his guests have something to read with their drink.
Additionally, as an added bonus, the first 12 guests who make a donation at his stand - and do not have a current subscription - will receive a coupon good for a free three-month subscription to either the Grove Sun or its sister paper, the Delaware County Journal.
Reiman decided he wanted to try his hand at raising funds for children impacted by cancer after his grandmother, Peggy Wieneke, was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer last year.
He picked St. Jude's after learning about the facility, and what it does for children.
"I thought if I raised funds for a children's hospital, they [the children] would have a better chance at life," Reiman said.
This is the second time Reiman, who is a homeschooled seventh grader, has undertaken a project of this type.
He said last year's project taught him several lessons, including how much people care about others.
He jokes by placing the stand by the sign, he can offer his guests a "drive-thru service."
This year, Reiman has also set up an online portal for donations, to allow those unable to visit his stand during the set time period, a chance to participate in his efforts. The online fundraising site may be found at http://bit.ly/chandler18.
