“Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.”
I was away from Grand Lake last week hanging out in northern Illinois, but I was able to wet a line prior to my exodus and on my return.
Unless the lake level changes dramatically I won’t mention it in subsequent reports. It’s 743’ and will be until the spring. Water temperature is still in the upper 70’s, and even with the rain the water color remains clear to slightly stained.
Shad are schooling in windblown pockets all the way to the back of coves. There will be a plethora of bass tournaments in the coming weeks. Fishing will be tough but I anticipate some large stringers. Continue to try top water lures and jigs. Remember patience is a virtue.
Crappie are still biting around docks, and the better fish are being caught on minnows. As an added bonus catfish are also being caught on the same pattern. There’s nothing better than a catfish on a crappie rod.
White bass are following the shad into shallower water. Gay Blades, Silver Buddies, and small Rattle Traps work great.
Until next time…keep your hook in the water.
