The Jay Lady Bulldogs Softball Team saw improvement this week getting its first two wins of the season while playing quality teams to respectable finishes.

Jay split with Stilwell on Senior Night Tuesday, Sept. 12 18-15 for the first win and 10-7 in second game of the twin bill.

In the Tahlequah Sequoyah Tournament Jay took one win over Tahlequah Sequoyah JV but fell to Red Oak, Fort Gibson, Beggs and Warner.

“We played some good softball this week. I hope we continue to grow and I can’t wait to see how we do this week,” said Head Softball Coach Samie Watson.

Jay 18 Stilwell 15

Jay out hit Stilwell 13-10 in the game but the Lady Bulldogs finished with 12 errors. Jay led 9-1 after the first inning and 11-6 after three.

Five runs from Stilwell in the top of the fourth tied the game at 11 for both teams. Seven runs from Jay in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning game the Lady Bulldogs an 18-11 advantage going into the final inning.

Senior Jessie Summerfield led the team at the plate going 4-4 while junior Maggie Lokey was 3-4. Senior Jade Frazier and freshman Kierra Wiley had two hits each.

Frazier took the win on the mound with four strikeouts and 10 hits.

Stilwell 10 Jay 7

Stilwell led 4-1 after the third inning before Jay scored five in the top of the fourth for a 6-4 lead. Stilwell scored six in the bottom of the sixth for the win.

Summerfield led at the plate finishing 3-4 with junior Breezy Stoddard and senior Shelby Davidson had two hits in the game.

Junior Regan Dry pitched five innings with six strikeouts and two walks Frazier pitched a part of an inning with one strike out.

Jay 5 Tahlequah Sequoyah JV 4

Jay won this game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Summerfield scored the winning run. Katelyn King tied the game earlier in the inning coming home on a Frazier sacrifice fly.

Jay took a 1-0 lead in the first with a Maggie Lokey run off a Stoddard single, Stoddard followed on a Wiley single and Summerfield came home on a steal of home plate in the bottom of the first inning.

Lokey and Summerfield had two hits each while Stoddard, Wiley and Frazier had one.

Dry pitched with four runs, three strikeouts and a walk to her credit.

Red Oaks 2 Jay 1

Class B sixth ranked Red Oak slipped by Jay with two runs in the first inning.

Jay scored their lone run from Summerfield in the top of the first. Lokey had two hits with Frazier and King one each.

Frazier pitched with four hits, two strikeouts and two walks.

Fort Gibson 3 Jay 1

Fort Gibson scored in the top of the third inning before Jay on a run from Summerfield tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Tigers won the game in the top of the sixth with two runs.

Jay out hit Fort Gibson with eight hits to four. Lokey and Summerfield collected half to of them with two hits each. Stoddard, Wiley, Dry and King added the remainder of the hits for Jay.

Dry pitched with three strikeouts, three walks and four hits.

Beggs 6 Jay 1

Jay was only out hit in this game 7-6 and neither team had an error. Beggs scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and win the softball game.

Dry scored the lone run for Jay while Summerfield led with two hits in the game. Lokey, Frazier, Dry and senior Avery Williamson had one hit each.

Frazier took the loss with three strikeouts and four walks in the game.

Warner 4 Jay 0

Warner scored three runs in the third inning for the majority of their runs.

Wiley had two hits for Jay while Stoddard, Dry and freshman Kennah Wheeler had one each.

Dry and Frazier combined for the loss.

What’s next?

Jay will play Checotah in the Northeastern Oklahoma State University Tournament in Tahlequah at 11:20 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 21. They will follow that game with a contest against Tulsa Edison at 12:40 p.m.

They will return to the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 23 with a contest against Fort Gibson at 9 a.m. and Bixby at 11:40 a.m.. Both Saturday games will take place at Tahlequah High School.
